With ground-based navigation, the aircraft know where they are by flying over radio beacons. Area navigation (RNAV) allows for more flexibility. On this case, virtual waypoints are defined with the help of terrestrial installations that have distance measuring equipment (DME). Alternatively, aircraft can use satellite navigation (GNSS). To do this, they must have technical equipment that meets the requirements for navigational accuracy (RNP).
