After take-off, the pilot activates the transponder on board the aircraft. This device receives the signals from the radar facilities and transmits a radio signal back which contains information on the flight number, level, speed and destination. The air traffic controller therefore sees more information than just the position of the aircraft on the radar screen. Additional information is also displayed for each individual flight.
