Who we are and where we go
DFS, the German air navigation service provider, was founded in 1993. That year saw a federal authority – the German Federal Administration of Air Navigation Services (BFS) founded in 1953 – become a private limited company (GmbH) and DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, known as DFS, was formed. DFS has been ensuring the safety of air traffic in Germany for three decades now. Over this whole time, we have developed and introduced a host of technical innovations. These cover the whole spectrum of air navigation services – from automatic speech recognition used in training, to support systems used by air traffic controllers and all the way up to satellite-based approach and departure procedures.
This technological change is continuing unabated and offers a multitude of opportunities for the future. Digitalisation and automation can relieve staff from having to do routine tasks and further increase efficiency. The use of modern cloud technologies can help to reduce the time and expense needed to maintain technical systems, while making them robust and reducing downtime. The aim of DFS is to continue to drive this technological change together with its European partners and to take a leading role in terms of safety, innovative technology and economic efficiency. We focus on three strategic priorities in this regard: sustainability, competitiveness and innovation.
