Setting a course for the future: Around 200 new recruits start their careers at DFS

In 2026, around 200 people are kicking off their careers at DFS, the German air navigation service provider. This autumn alone, DFS is welcoming around 50 new apprentices and students on dual study programmes that combine academic study with practical training. In addition, 144 student air traffic controllers and around 24 trainees preparing for other operational roles will start at various points during the year.

The new recruits are starting training or degree programmes in fields ranging from air traffic management and IT to air navigation services engineering, and commercial and administrative roles. Over the coming years, they will acquire the knowledge they need for their future roles, with practical experience in a safety-critical environment forming part of their training from the outset. Andrea Wächter, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) on the DFS Executive Board, said: "The air navigation services of tomorrow need a new generation of qualified employees entering the profession." That is why we train our specialists in-house and invest in their long-term development. I am delighted that around 200 young people are starting their careers at DFS this year and will work with us to prepare air navigation services for the future."

Wide range of training opportunities, strong career prospects
DFS trains the future specialists it needs in-house. Alongside air traffic controller training and the dual study programme in Air Traffic Management, the company offers apprenticeships recognised by the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK), as well as dual study programmes in fields including IT, engineering and management. DFS also provides its own training for operational specialist roles in flight data processing, aeronautical information services, flight information services and aerodrome coordination. Around 600 people are currently in training or enrolled in dual study programmes at DFS. Through these programmes, DFS is investing for the long term in the skilled workforce needed for air navigation services. The company offers comprehensive training with a strong practical component. It also provides a wide range of development and career opportunities, together with remuneration that reflects the level of responsibility.
